Coaches Comments 2013

Pre-Season:

We had a great Winter and Spring of lifting and nearly all of our players participate in one or more sports.  That is really the key.  Learning in competitive situations and working hard.  Our Spring Ball was awesome, fast, crisp and snappy with older guys mentoring younger guys.  For the 2nd year we attended camp at Mesa in Grand Junction CO.  We had just over 100 players divided into 6 teams.  We played more football in those 3 days than any team in America.   Our guys got up in the morning and went to work every M, W, F in the weight room.  The dedication and commitment of your Mustangs is impressive.   We are developing strength, quickness and stamina.   Mustang Mini-Camp was changed to a morning format and our Senior retreat "Camp Victory", was the best ever.

Fall Camp:

Fall Camp opened on Monday August 12th at 12:01 am with our Seniors participating in "Midnight Madness."  Seniors and Coaches took the final steps to be ready for the 140 underclassmen who reported at 3pm.   What a great way to start the season.  You can read the trib article athttp://trib.com/sports/high-school/prep-football-natrona-county-opens-season-with-midnight-madness/article_6a8dea1a-d56e-5c48-b4cb-bc0441c80fa2.html  The weather has been extremely warm and we are working like crazy to get ready.  This is a brand new team.  Only 3 starters return from last year.  Enthusiasm is high and as well as expectation.  The beauty of high school football is that everyone grows up.  The young guys who go through this transformation in such a short time are amazing.  It is humbling to be a part of it and witness it.

Cheyenne Central:

We practice up to the very end getting ready.  It was nearly "Midnight Madness 2" at our Thursday pregame.  Thursday is our service day in the community.  We try to reach out to the community and do some good for a few hours.  It is like Christmas every Thursday.  We finally got to Friday and on the road we went.  Cheyenne was 10° cooler than Casper...nice.  We were able to watch our Volleyball team in Cheyenne and the energy of our guys helped the Fillies come from behind for a victory over Rock Springs.  We played defense first, after the stop we drove and kicked a field goal and never trailed.  We extended the lead before half and really started hitting our stride the second half.  I was so impressed with our guys.  We played a ton of players and every guy stepped up and really improved.  We played good team defense and our offense really gelled.  We had over 540 yards of offense on opening night!  You can read the following previews and game articles.  http://trib.com/sports/high-school/prep-football-natrona-county-sees-plenty-of-change/article_2fa87f06-9177-50ff-bef3-4fa83b91a77e.html

Cheyenne East:

The Thunderbirds are fresh off an opening week victory over Rock Springs 50-7.  They are talented and well coached.  It will be another great match up and a great opportunity.

We had a nice week of practice.  We continued our improvement.  It has been unseasonably hot.  Pregame was 100 degrees Thursday evening.  Friday was warm and beautiful.  A large crowd filled the stands wearing LIVE ORANGE shirts that supported the Make A Wish fundraiser.  We played a tough game and battled hard coming up short in a 3OT game to 42-41.  I have never seen a 3OT game.  It was exciting and exhausting.  Congratulations to both teams.  It was hard fought.  We will continue to improve dramatically over the next few weeks.  Our upside is tremendous.  We are disappointed with loss but we are humbled and grateful for the support.  Onward and upward.  We are going to really be a nice football team before this season is over.  You can read about the game at   http://trib.com/sports/high-school/football/wyovarsity-four-keys-natrona-against-cheyenne-east/article_077f30f4-dc47-5d59-86c2-e5d2088ef77c.html             http://trib.com/sports/high-school/prep-football-natrona-selling-t-shirts-for-make-a-wish/article_1e0b2949-c584-543e-b26a-73698cbfb48a.html                                     http://trib.com/sports/high-school/prep-football-natrona-selling-t-shirts-for-make-a-wish/article_1e0b2949-c584-543e-b26a-73698cbfb48a.html                            http://www.wyosports.net/high_school/cheyenne-east-seeks-mental-toughness-against-natrona/article_23e77156-16b9-11e3-98ef-001a4bcf887a.html

Laramie:

The Plainsmen have a new coach who has successfully turned around several programs.  He brings much experience to LHS.  They are 1-1 like us on the young season.  Laramie and Natrona have so much traditon and the rivalry has so many stories.  It will be another great test and opportunity for us.  It rained all week in Laramie and let up at 10am on Friday.  The weather was perfect and the field was in great shape.  We had a fast trip down missing a minimal amount of school.  We played much improved and controlled the game early.  Our Defense and Special teams gave our offense the short field and we committed no turnovers and very few penalties.  I am really proud of how our guys are improving.  That is the name of the game for us...keep getting better!  Every Play...Every Day!  You can read articles about the game....

Gillette:

The Camels won a weather delayed thriller at Central to move to 3-0.  They also have victories over Kelly Walsh and Evanston.  They have several key skill players back including UW commit Austin Fort.  It will be a great test between two good teams.  We will get ready and have fun doing it!

A beautiful Friday evening at Mustang Stadium.  We appreciate all the support.  What a great game.  We have had two home games and they have both been overtime!  We have had the toughest schedule in 4A through the first four weeks and we are 2-2 with both losses coming in OT by a single point at home.  This has been the wildest four weeks ever!  You have to love your Mustangs.  We are getting better every day and every play.  We want to grow to a level by the end of the year that puts us in championship form.  The name of the game for us is to keep improving!  Our upside is temendous, we are all excited.  You can read about the game at.

Evanston:

We travel to SW Wyoming to take on the Red Devils who are coming off an impressive win at Laramie and have and identical 2-2 record. This will be a huge week for us to practice well, learn, study, get better in the weight room and take our teammates to another level.  We had a good week, all levels, Frosh, Sophs, JV and Varsity all showed dramatic improvement.  We are getting better every day.  We had a nice trip to Evanston, stopped in Rawlins for our "tour" and once more at Little America.  Evanston probably had the best weather of anywhere in Wyoming for a football game.  They had their nasty weather on T,W,H and it cleared out on Friday.  It was Homecoming for the Red Devils and the Mustangs started fast.  We forced a quick 3 and out and scored in two plays.  We continuted the momentum and built a 31-0 half-time lead.  The final was 38-6 and we loaded up and hit the road as we had a home JV game at 9am.  We appreciate all the great effort the kids and parents are putting forth.  You can read about the game at

Oil Bowl:

Big week in Casper as the 49th Oil Bowl kicks off this Friday at 6pm.  It is a great community event and showcases the dedication of all the young people of Casper.  You will see the Mustang Fighting Band, our JrROTC, our dancers, cheerleaders and enthusiastic student body.  Kelly Walsh will feature the same.  It is a blessing to witness it.  We will have a great week of practice getting ready for a diversified Trojan offense and defense.  KW features many veteran Seniors and it looks to be a great match-up that has huge playoff implications.  Our Mustang Sophomores start it off on Tuesday as they host KW, 6:00pm kickoff.

What a week, winter rolled in early and destroyed trees and property on Thursday night.  Many folks were without power and school was cancelled Friday.  Looking at the forecasts the administration moved the game to Saturday at 1:00pm.  On Friday their was talk of moving the game to Monday.  Through the efforts of hundreds of Mustang Volunteers we were able to play on Saturday.  Students, Parents and Community worked hard to shovel the field  We had to move the time back to 2:00pm to finish the job but the surface quickly dried and it was a great day for a game.  The kids on both teams battled hard, it was good, tough football played on both sides.  We took the lead, it was tied at half-time, we took the lead again and it was tied at regulation. We scored first in OT and missed the XPT, on a 3rd and 19 the Trojans made a great play to tie the game on a well caught ball.  Their XPT was good and the 49th Oil Bowl was over.  It was a classic defensive battle with both defenses holding the respective offense in check.  Congratulations to Kelly Walsh for earning the victory.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the game possible and thanks to all the fans for your support.  We are disappointed with the loss but we will continue to do things the right way, by working hard, smiling, having a good attitude and taking care of one another.  That is the beauty and experience of athletics, you have adversity, disappointments and unprecedented things happen to test your endurance and make you stronger.  I would bet that no team in history has had every home game (3) in which you were never trailed be tied at the end, go to OT and fall short by one point each time.  This will make us stronger not weaker and the beauty of 4A football is you get a second chance.  Once again, the name of the game for us is to keep improving and to get into championship form.  Perspective is important.  Enjoy it as this will not come again and we are making some serious memories!

Cheyenne South:

The Bison are in their 3rd year and still looking for their first win as a program.  They have been close this year.  They are much improved and have held leads on Evanston, Kelly Walsh and Laramie. Their kids are tough and they are well conditioned.  They have talent, size and speed.  I have told many folks that 4A football is pretty close from top to bottom this year.  The margin seperating teams is smaller than ever.  Everyone is competitive and has good kids.  This makes for exciting football every week.  We need to heal up with a short week of preparation and continue to get better.  We have a tremendous upside.  We will get everyone healthy and get on a roll.

It is homecoming week and we are on a two week school spirit celebration.  NCHS is the greatest place to work and go to school.  Our kids and faculty are doing fantastic, our ACT scores and successful programs speak for themselves.  We welcome home all Mustangs as we celebrate our past, present and future!  What a great homecoming week!  The best in my 23 years.  The parade, the coronation, the pep assembly, the BBQ, the game and finally the dance.  What classy week of celebration for our students, parents, staff and alumni. Very impressive!  Well Done!  We continued our wet fall with rain during the week which cleared on Friday.  It was a cool evening and the winds calmed to make for a great night for football.  We scored on Defense on the first play of the game and continued to roll to a 58-6 victory.  We looked fast and played well.  We are really improving at all levels, our freshmen, sophomore and JV teams all looked good this week as well.  We are appreciative of all the support and we look to continue our improvement and work hard to reach our potential.    (Mustang Stadium 40 minutes prior to Kickoff w/ the sunset in the portal)

Sheridan:

We will make the 2 hour trip North this Friday.  Sheridan is 6-1 with their only loss coming to Gillette.  They are well coached and their kids play hard.  It should be a great game.  This is an important week for us to get on a roll and really play well and play hard.  We are working hard to improve at every position.  Time is short and we have miles to go before we sleep!

We had a nice trip north on I-25.  It was a sunny day, we picniced on the 50 yard line and went inside for our final preparations.  You could sense a good feeling of energy and confidence from our guys.  Ben Doyle talked to all of us about his experience of "ringing the bell" and having the right attitude.  We lost the toss and Sheridan wanted the ball first.  We held but muffed the return and started on our own 1 yard line.  After some play we found ourselves trailing in regulation for the first time this year.  We game back and answered and took a 14 point lead into half-time.  We played a complete game and pushed our lead out to 18 points to win our 4th road trip 38-20.  Our Mustnags played well and played hard for the entire game.  We will enjoy for a few hours and then get back to work.  We are humbled by our blessings and thankful for the opportunities that lie ahead of us.

Rock Springs:

The Tigers will end the regular season with a road trip to Mustang Stadium for our Senior night to conclude the regular season.  We are excited to get back to work and improve our game in every aspect.  Time is short and you can feel the sense of urgency on our team.  We honored our Seniors and played great as we rolled to a 56-0 victory.

Quarter Finals:

We secured the 4th seed and host Kelly Walsh at 7pm on Friday November 1st.  It should be a great matchup and our guys are excited and playing well heading into the playoffs where it is a new season and everyone is 0-0.  It was a cool night and the winds calmed as the crowd swelled.  We played fast, and physical and dominated from the start holding KW to 107 yards of offense and 3 completions.  We intercepted four passes and Logan Wilson kicked four field goals.  It was a total school effort, the Fighting Mustang Marching Band was awesome, the ROTC, cheerleaders and student body was great!  We have improved dramatically over the last four weeks and we still have alot of improvement left in us.

Semi Finals:

We travel to Gillette next Friday.  We will play an undefeated Camel team that beat us by 1pt in OT 2 months ago.  We will practice well and get ready.  New season and everyone is 1-0.

We had a great week of practice.  Gillette is so sound and does so many things offensively that it takes a greater effort to learn, practice and prepare for the Camels.  We traveled well and everything went as planned.  We are thankful for the large contingent of fans who made the trip to cheer on the Mustangs.  Your support made a difference.  It was an awesome game.  A defensive struggle, we led 14-0 at one point and the Camels scored and had the ball at the end but could not convert on 4th down.   Final 14-7.  We lined up in victory formation and took a knee and earned a trip to the finals in Laramie at the University of Wyoming.   Great effort, hard fought, inspiring!  Great Job Mustangs.  We still have our best game in us.  We can play better and we will.

Championship:

One more week to prepare, get better and compete.  We are thankful for the blessings and opportunities that we have had.  We are humble and grateful.  We will play a 9-2 Cheyenne East team that beat us by 1 pt in triple OT the 2nd game of the season.   We will practice well and get ready.  GO MUSTANGS!

We had the best practice week of the year.  The kids and coaches did a great job getting ready and we had a perfect trip to Laramie.  We had to adjust our game plan due to some significant injuries during the semi-final game. The team responded well and played dominating defense.  We gave up two big plays in the first half and that was it.  East never gained a 1st down in the second half.  We moved the ball but could not score. We missed two close field goals that would have been good on the 5' wider high school goals.  We played well enough to win but came up 1 point short 14-13.  This was one of the most rewarding years I have ever witnessed.  This team grew and improved more than any other I have ever seen.  Hats off to the kids and assistant coaches who worked so hard every day.  Thank you to the parents for your support of your sons. Thank you to the fans who were so faithful an loyal this year.  We grew alot and made memories that will last a lifetime.

Thanks for your support and More Later.

Thanks for checking in.   Trust that we will do our best, hang together, protect each other, inspire each other and strengthen each other as we make this a season of growth.  I can't tell you what a blessing it is to work for these kids at NCHS.  "All Hail to Casper High" and remember that "Every Day is a Great Day to be a Mustang."
