Coaches Comments 2018

Pre-Season:

We had a great Winter and Spring of lifting and nearly all of our players participate in multiple sports.  That is really the key.  Learning in competitive situations and working hard.  Our Spring Ball was awesome, fast, crisp and snappy with older guys mentoring younger guys.  We took 9-12 graders to Black Hills State University.  We played alot of football and continue to get better.   Our guys got up in the morning and went to work every M, W, F in the weight room.  The dedication and commitment of your Mustangs is impressive.  We really had a nice summer.  Particularly our Seniors and our young guys.    We are developing strength, quickness, and stamina.   Our Senior retreat "Camp Victory", was fantastic.

Fall Camp:

Fall Camp opened on Monday, August 6th at 12:01 am with our Seniors participating in "Midnight Madness."  Seniors and Coaches took the final steps to be ready for the 150 underclassmen who reported at 7am.   What a great way to start the season.  The weather has been awesome!  With the late start of school we can actually practice in the morning in a combined format from 7am to Noon.  We are having one of the best fall camps in recent memory.  Our Seniors are doing a great job of leading our team.   Enthusiasm is high as well as expectation.  The beauty of high school football is that everyone grows up.  The young guys who go through this transformation in such a short time are amazing.  It is humbling to be a part of it and witness it. You can read about our first day at Article 1

Cheyenne South:

While working on ourselves we are working on Cheyenne South.  They have a veteran group of coaches and are continually building a nice program.  We travel on the road to visit the Bison this year.  We have to be ready for a physical run game and a fundamentally sound team.  More Later  We started fast and never looked back.  I thought we played physically tough football for our first time out.  The great part is we had a nice flow and have lots of things we can improve on.  We have tremendous upside and will get better every day.  Final Score 59-0  (This first weeks was something else, we played 6 games over the weekend and gained alot of experience).  You can read about the game at  CST   WTE

Gillette:

The Camels are improved and older this year.  It is a process as they open two schools.  We expect a tough competitive game when we travel to Gillette Friday.  Sophs at 3 and Varsity at 7.    We had a good trip and our Sophs were victorious with a 56-6 win and the Varsity followed suit with a 58-6 victory.  You can read about the game CST

Sheridan:

The Broncs come to town and we have had a nice rivalry with Natrona winning in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and the Broncs winning in 2015, 2016 and 2017.  Last year was close with 1 in OT and the other on turnovers in the Championship game.  This is our first week of school so alot of changes to our daily schedules but our guys are ready to go.    You can read about the 34-7 victory at CST 1    CST 2

Laramie:

The Plainsmen come to town with two of the more dynamic runners in 4A and some very nice defensive players.  We fought hard and were slow starting on offense but we were sparked by Special Teams play and a defensive score.  It was an awesome night for football and a large and enthusiastic crowd.  You can read about our 37-14 win at CST1    CST2

East:

We travel to Cheyenne East for a very important game as East is talented, well coached and eager to play us.  We are continuing to improve in all aspects look forward to a great game.

We played a tough game.  Lost by a point. We are a little bit injured and sick and need some healing.  The good news is we didn't coach our best game nor did we play our best game and we will get more healthy and keep developing depth.  "You learn a line in victory and a whole book in defeat."  This has made us better and will propel us onto being a much better team.

Thunder Basin:

The Bolts bring the #1 rated offense, fast pace and a group of veteran linemen on their FIRST VISIT to Mustang Stadium.  We are working getting stronger, healthy and developing depth.  This week is big for us and it is homecoming.

This was probably one of the most entertaining games you will ever see.  Two teams slugged it out and the the Mustangs prevail. 41-34  We are getting better.  Stronger, better shape, fundamentals are improving and we are developing more depth.

Oil Bowl:

54th Oil Bowl and Harry Geldien Stadium.   Coach Geldien was a good man, I sure enjoyed visiting with him when he would come and run on the underground track in the old weight room.   He and Coach Estes Sr. were regulars every day after school.  Alot of history for our community.....This year Both teams are trying to overcome injuries and improve.  It will be another classic in the history of this great rivalry.

The weather broke on what was a cold day and the evening was very nice as the Mustangs prevail 42-12.  We ran the ball well. Special teams were solid and we played great defense.  Thank you to all the fans.  It was fun night.

Cheyenne Central:

Senior night at NCHS.  It is always special this week as we honor and thank our Seniors and their families.  This is the 105th meeting between these two teams.    The Mustangs drove the ball and capitalized on nearly every opportunity to win 51-14.  Our defense was solid and held the Indians in check for most of the game.  It was fun night and we are continuing to improve.

Rock Springs:

We travel to Sweetwater County this Friday for a 6pm kickoff against a tough Tiger team.  They run the single wing and wing T and are very physical and effective.  It is a big game for us as we wrap up the regular season.

Thank you for your support and More Later.

Thanks for checking in.   Trust that we will do our best, hang together, protect each other, inspire each other and strengthen each other as we make this a season of growth.  I can't tell you what a blessing it is to work for these young people at NCHS.  "All Hail to Casper High" and remember that "Every Day is a Great Day to be a Mustang."
